POP/SMTP: This is the simplest (and least expensive) of mail protocols. POP stands for Post Office Protocol and that is exactly how it works - like a physical P.O. Box. Mail arrives and is stored on our server until you retrieve it using a mail program such as Outlook. Typically, the messages are retrieved then deleted from the server - immediately or a few days later. So just like with a physical P.O. Box, once the mail is removed from the server, it is no longer there and only exists on the device that retrieved it. Mail is sent from your email program through our mail server using SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol). This protocol set is best for those who use email on a single device. While setting the delete on server option to a few days instead of immediate will allow you to receive mail on more than one device, sent items are only stored on the device used to send them. Because of this, backing up your email data regularly is a must.
IMAP/SMTP: IMAP (Internet Messages Access Protocol) is the next step up in functionality. IMAP leaves all your mail on our mail server and your Email program "views" the folders and messages, by downloading only the message headers until you actually open a message. Mail is still sent from your email program through our mail server using SMTP but instead of keeping a copy of the sent message on your local system, it is stored in the Sent Items folder on the server. Because all messages are stored on our server, more disk space is required which costs more. Also, because messages and attachments are only downloaded when opened, IMAP "feels" slower. It really isn't but since POP3 downloads everything at once, you just find yourself waiting at a different time. This protocol set is a good choice for those who need to use their email from multiple devices that don't support MAPI and/or Exchange Active Sync.
MAPI: MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) is a robust suite of protocols that provides the end user with an experience similar to having your own Microsoft Exchange Server, but at a fraction of the cost. Like IMAP, MAPI stores all your mail on our mail server but it also stores your contacts, calendars and tasks there. When combined with Exchange ActiveSync on your smart phone or tablet, it gives you complete, real-time synchronization between all your devices. To use MailEnable's implentation of MAPI, you must be running Microsoft Outlook on a Windows computer and you must install the MAPI Connector (available on our Downloads page).&nbap; If you use multiple Windows computers or one Windows computer along with smart phones and/or tablets, MAPI is the only way to go.
Exchange ActiveSync: EAS is Microsoft's protocol for mobile devices. For years, it was only available to users of Microsoft's Exchange Sever but MailEnable has licensed the software for use with their server software. If your smart phone or tablet supports EAS (most do), you can keep all your mobile devices synchronized in real time with your Windows computer(s) running Outlook and MailEnable's MAPI Connector. And we're not just talking email - you can sync your contacts, calendars and tasks as well.
